Frenzied fans went into overdrive as they tried to get their hands on tickets with many queuing up overnight outside Ticketmaster outlets, while others went online.

The concert promoters said there are still tickets available but they are selling well.

Meanwhile the five-piece have announced that they will donate £200,000 (€233,904) from ticket sales to a cancer charity.

The pop superstars have announced 50p (€0.58) from each ticket sold for their 2014 tour - with dates in Dublin, Sunderland, Manchester, Edinburgh and London - will go to Stand Up To Cancer.

The 'Little Thing' hitmakers - made up of Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik - also plan to add more dates if the first ones sell out, meaning more money for the charity.

Liam said: "We're so proud to be supporting Stand Up To Cancer while touring the UK and Ireland.

"Cancer affects nearly everyone at some point in their lives so we all need to do what we can to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

"Stand Up To Cancer is all about bringing people together as a collective force and we hope our fans will get involved too."

Meanwhile, the charity's director Claire Rowney thanked the band and said she was delighted to have them on board.

She added: "We're over the moon that One Direction have chosen to support Stand Up To Cancer.

"The money raised will help fund ground-breaking research specifically designed to have an impact within just a few years, bringing new and kinder treatments to patients sooner.

"We want to thank them and their fans for their support.”
